DAVID HICKS STUDIO
At my core I'm a maker of objects. I seek a connection in material and its formal byproducts. Ultimately thinking through it in order to conceive my thoughts and ideas. It has become a second language of sorts. The practice of making is essential  to me. I have always been a maker of something. Currently I am a maker of objects that reference botanical structures. In recent years I have found myself obsessed with organic structures of plants and other vegetation.  I think the core of my obsession is the connection I make between the botanical world and my own existence. There are many similarities that I draw from in order to play out my ideas. Whether it be the cycles of life or the onset of decay it feels right to me and the processes I have in the studio. In my work you can find structure that are dry and shriveling like garden clipping left in the summer sunshine to dry as well as surfaces that a wet and ripe with color like a garden after the hose. It is at these poles and the intersections between that I play; searching for moments of material and formal connectivity.
